About: The Chair of Biomedical Ethics of the University of Zurich was established in 2005 in response to the growing need for education, research and consultancy in the area of medical ethics and bioethics. It belongs to the Medical Faculty and forms part of the Centre for Ethics, a well-established interdepartmental institution that plays a prominent role in the Swiss debate on ethical matters. The Chair is actively engaged in: health research ethics; clinical ethics; public health ethics; ethical aspects of biotechnological developments; theoretical foundations of biomedical ethics; and biomedical law.

Role and Tasks in the Project:

UNIZH’s role in the project includes the following tasks:

  • Link to the research network in the area of systems and synthetic biology at the University of Zurich/ ETH;
  • Interaction with other ethics scientists, including the ethics department of the WHO;
  • Monitor the e-forum and the organisation of the international meeting (in 2008);
  • Supervising and moderating the ethics section in the e-forum;
  • Contribution to the dissemination material;
  • Representation of the project in ethical issues;
  • Contribution to the fact-finding mission, especially regarding ethical issues of synthetic biology;
